End of Year Giving to Team Heart

All proceeds from this gift will help fund Team Heart to provide cardiac surgery to young adults suffering from rheumatic heart disease in Rwanda, a country that has no surgical options. Team Heart is partnering with the citizens of Rwanda to build an "in country" cardiac surgery program, while developing early detection, prevention and education programs to prevent years of suffering and early deaths due to undiagnosed strep infection.

Welcome to our blog for Team Heart 09!

Team Heart is a volunteer group of nurses, physicians, perfusionists, respiratory therapists, physicians, bio-medical engineers, and lay volunteers traveling to Kigali Rwanda for our second surgical interventional trip. Excitement and hard work has been building for 6 months as plans for this year have developed.

This year we are privileged to have volunteers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Mass General Hospital, Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Mayo Clinic and University of Minnesota, Georgetown Medical Center in DC and Sydney Australia. In addition, we have a volunteer from one of our valued corporate partners, as well as volunteers bringing special contributions. Each volunteer brings such unique talents and the Team is stronger for their involvement.

Over the next two weeks, we will introduce you to each and describe the role that each will play as we fine tune this trip.

On the other side, our Rwandan counterparts are doing the same preparation with emails flying to and from as we check and double check our supply lists, hotel accommodations and plane reservations.

Weeks have been spent with key team members involved in procurement. Anesthesia, perfusion, OR and ICU and step-down polished their list to ensure we have what we need but not a surplus. Volunteers spent several weeks checking expiration dates and packing equipment safely. Friday morning our shipment was picked up ---- next stop Kigali!!!

PS….. the little chick featured in many of the packing photos was donated by one of the children of our volunteers. Watch closely as the chick accompanies us on our trip for luck!

  2. Hi Everyone!!!
I want you to all take a minute and think about the WONDERFUL task you are about to undertake. Some of you for a 2nd time. Mike aka GUS, even for his 3rd time with Team Heart. You are all exceptional individuals and together will be an AWESOME team.

Although I am not able to be there in body this trip, I am there in Soul and prayers for the mission. Hug often, share moments, take care of each other, and take in the experience.

Be safe, be strong, and be together in the moments that arise.

    God Bless you all!!!

  43. From Vlad to everyone
    Hi Dear Friends,
I hope you are all well, staying healthy and strong while providing excellent care and good deeds. I’m so glad that you are very busy, more cases=more lives changed for the better and the stronger the whole program will be. At the same time though, don’t wear yourselves out! And leave some work for years to come. I’m so happy for you all. Happy Birthday Katie and Luigi! And anyone else who may be celebrating their B’ day in Kigali.

I sincerely hope that all your cases have gone well and the ones to come will successful too.
After the work is done, I hope you get some down time, relax, perhaps, go on safari? Good luck, hope the elephants come out this time.

It is so nice to follow your stories, special thanks to Ceeya for the picture of Luigi and Erneste, nice post Nelson, very nice to see Laureen in the forefront, too, the pictures from the OR look great, THANK YOU !

And just like Leslie, can’t wait to see you, and give you all a hug! Stay safe!
    With love and respect,
    Vlad
